This might be a useful solution to your problem.  "They" have figured
out how to build a "live disk" of XP on a USB flash drive, meaning you
can boot and run XP merely by plugging in a memory stick (assuming the
Thinkpad can boot from USB, which I gather it can).  As long as you have
at least one FAT32 or NTFS partition you should be able to access the
hard drive after booting from the flash drive.  This might be helpful.
