Qemu is also a good alternative. It isn't quite as polished as vmware, 
nor as fast, but it is perfectly usable, and it is GPL. Slowdown is 
approx 2-times (using kernel module) or 5-times (in userspace).

Wine is also nearly at release 1.0, and runs quite a lot of windows 
programs.

You only need to run windows native if you really need raw access to the 
hardware, eg strange usb devices, or games.
