Maybe try a later version compiled from source? Mine is 1.1.2 and use 
128bit WEP. And I can download over one hundred MB at 620kB/s (My 
highest speed with 802.11b) without dropping. I haven't tried WPA yet.  
Any encryption you're using?  Maybe that's the problem?  Maybe try 
downloading something big without encryption?
