Doesn't seem to be a big problem here.  Sure you don't have a defective
drive or have DMA turned off?

 Timing cached reads:   1676 MB in  2.00 seconds = 836.87 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  116 MB in  3.00 seconds =  38.66 MB/sec

(Thinkpad X31, 1G RAM, 1.6GHz Pentium-M, Seagate 120G 5400 RPM drive, X
and applications running on Ubuntu Breezy)

This drive isn't the fastest in the world, certainly, but it's quite a
bit faster in this machine than the 5400 RPM 40GB drive it replaced.
