Hm. I have an R51 with an Intel chipset. It seems fine to me. I have 
Debian "sid" with X.org 7.1, i810 driver version 1.6.0, AIGLX.

If you have AIGLX you probably should export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true. That 
significantly boosted performance for me.

Maybe I don't know what I'm missing but performance on my machine is 
satisfactory for me.

Setting your X server to 16-bit can boost performance on Intel chips, too.
