I had the same problem (and everything was configured properly in the kernel
in regards to USB), it seems that there is a bug (with 2.6 kernels) when
using the sync option in fstab and USB and fire wire devices. Remove these
entries if you have them and try again.

Now my iPod and SanDisk flash key fly. I just have to use the sync command
from console before I remove the the key. Hope that helps.
