You're right !! I use this:

/dev/sda  /mnt/iaudio  vfat defaults,rw,users,sync,noauto,dmask=000 

I was completely puzzled because yesterday I mounted the device 
manually and the transfer rate was really high (5s to transfer 60MB) 
and today I added an entry in /etc/fstab and the transfer was sooo 
slow...

Answer is, manually I didn't use sync option.
