Is the proper module for your card loaded?

 	What does ifconfig -a show?

One recommendation: stop using GUI tools to configure things
like networking, use the powerful tools under the hood to figure out
what might be wrong. In most cases, the GUI tools will break things
(i.e. not start networking until GNOME is running, etc.)
