I have IDE only as modules, so I should not need to reserve it at boot
time, since there is only the SATA/PATA driver.

If I try to load the IDE stuff nothing happens, too.  (Maybe this is
because I have libata.atapi_enabled=1 on kernel command line?)

As far as I can remember there is no DMA support when using ide-cd.
(The T43 has an SATA-to-PATA bridge).
