[ltp] howto get CDrom to be bootable

everytime i place a bootable linux cd into the cd drive it fails to boot off 
the cd.

i have had a look at some spare laptop hard drives to see if there are jumpers 
(like on desktop HD) to set it up as a slave but i'm not sure.

the laptop is a 380 thinkpad and the HD is 1 gig disk.

The bios setting have nothing there (only HD, floppy 1, floppy 2 and pcimca 
(or whatever the name is) available to select.

ideas hints greatfully appreciated.
