AFAIK, they were Intel based.

IIRC, IBM contracted with Acer to build the i-series laptop.  In
general they run linux fine.  Some of the models were Asia specific,
but quite a few were sold in the US.  I'm not sure which models
specifically.  In general Acer stuck pretty close to IBM's designs as
they share many of the features and interfaces the IBM designed
models.
