1) Did it work before it went to service?
2) Does it work in Windows?
3) If it works in Windows:
** is there anything in cat /proc/bus/input/devices remotely suggesting
       a touchpad?
*** If so, is there a device node corresponding to the entry in
input/devices? This was a show-stopper for me, until I figured
out I had to write an udev-rule for that input device.
*** If so, is the synaptics touchpad configuration in xorg.conf
           correct?
*** If so, is the synaptics driver loaded properly (by X)?
*** If not, is the touchpad enabled in BIOS?
