My x60 does get hot and the heat is concentrated under the right
palm-rest. The heat isn't an issue when the laptop isn't running on AC
power though. And really, it's not that bad.

I only installed the ipw3945 software last night and the heat was
noticeable long before so I'm inclined to believe the wireless NIC isn't
at fault. I ran Fedora Core5 on it for a week and I noticed that FC5
seemed to be accessing the hard disk almost constantly. As you can
imagine the heat was much worse. I'm running Debian Etch now and the
heat seems to be less of an issue.

The x60 doesn't lack in horsepower. I compiled the 2.6.18.3 kernel last
night and she chewed through it like a workstation.

My previous laptop was a T40. From what you describe (long running
simulations) you may be better off with something like the T60. I
purchased the x60 for it's size (I travel constantly) and I'm very
pleased that it's got some horsepower too.

Hope this info is of some use. Good luck with your purchase.
