Take a look at the font section of my Mandrake on Linux howto at 
www.richardneill.org.  That might help - and it has some pictures too.


Quick summary:
   - Set the correct screen res. in X
   - Install a libfreetype with support for hinting.
   - Disable antialiasing
   - Install the MS Corefonts.
   - Configure KDE + GNOME.
