Writing an MBR will not damage the partition itself. If you like, backup
the existing MBR from a Linux live CD or installation with a command
like this:

dd if=3D/dev/hda of=3D/path/to/backup.file bs=3D1 count=3D512

If you have SATA (don't know about T43p) than it is 'sda' not 'hda'.
