I can understand your particular point of view easily, since mine is
very similar...

Good idea. Ubuntu Dapper is probably closer of the
"working-out-of-the-box" than Fedora C 5, for this and also for other
innovative things. 
BTW, valuable elink that of above! In fact, its page is linking to other
"ubuntu sites" that show the XGL issue extremely clearly, within a few,
easy, affordable steps, that's my opinion.

Maybe. So, it seems the main problem could be nothing apart from ...to
have time for it.

There are several video clips uploaded to YouTube, everyone that watchs
them then "wants" that..., at least (and by the moment) people associate
those nice effects to a particular O.S. and word: Linux. This is really
positive. But then, from this point to the decision of changing to it
just because of XGL effects..., actually there is a enormous gap, and
IMHO no much people would switch to Linux simply for that lonely reason
(nor because of _one_ only reason, whatever it be). Just, as you said
before... "It's fun."
