DRI and 3D are two different things: you can have DRI working (fast 2D)  
but 3D "failing" (mesa software renderer fallback).

Yes. ATI never told anybody how these chips work (and your card is based  
on one of those).

You can install an OLD version of the closed-source ATI driver. Do not use  
a recent version as ATI has dropped support for these cards (3D and 2D).
