Kernel bug alert!  From the 2.6.19 scsi updates list:

* Fix refcount breakage with 'echo "1" > scan' when target already
  present
* sd: fix cache flushing on module removal (and individual
  device removal)

For bay HD adapters, that means a hdparm -y is a *very* good idea before the
eject command is issued.
