Ladies and gentlemen,

The ibm-acpi driver is being renamed to thinkpad-acpi and moved from
drivers/acpi to drivers/misc.

These changes are scheduled for inclusion in the Linux kernel mainline
2.6.22 release. The driver is still named ibm-acpi for 2.6.21.

The /proc interface (/proc/acpi/ibm) will not be changed, except for the
output of /proc/acpi/ibm/driver, which will reflect the new driver name and
version number (0.14).

The driver full name is now "ThinkPad ACPI Extras" ("IBM" was dropped).

modprobe ibm_acpi should remain working, as thinkpad-acpi provides an
ibm-acpi "module alias", and this alias will be retained for a long time
(two years), if at all possible.

The ibm-acpi "project" name is not being changed yet. I didn't work out the
logistics to change them yet, and I am not in too much of an hurry to do it,
either.

About the old thinkpad-acpi driver:

There was an "thinkpad-acpi" driver way back in the 2.6.8-2.6.10 time frame.
That driver was never merged in Linux mainline (ibm-acpi got merged, in
2.6.10), and it only supported hotkeys. As far as I can tell, the old
thinkpad-acpi driver did not see much widespread usage.
