Just that I experienced the same thing on a Dell desktop running
Debian GNU/Linux (etch). I too, use Emacs (22), and am pretty sure
that's it. The beeps would only occur when I was typing in an Emacs
window, if I remember correctly.

I fixed it with "modprobe -r pcspkr" ;-).
