Hotswapping should now work with mainline if you use libata (which works 
with pata). Thinkpad wiki has all the info you need.

Granted libata pata support is marked EXPERIMENTAL, but it's rock solid 
for me and I bet it's way more robust and just as well tested as the old 
pata driver anyway.
