Mute the microphone in the mixer. (something like gnome-alsamixer is 
probably most useful). Otherwise, you do indeed get a direct signal path 
from Mic -> Amp -> Speakers.

That's correct.

But this switches off again immediately.

What do you mean? Does some application switch it off for you?
