I have similar problems with the battery status, running Debian (amd64) with
a 2.6.21-rc7 kernel on a Thinkpad R60. KPowersave doesn't show battery
status, although it is available in /proc/acpi/battery. It used to work
with earlier kernels.

I suspect something with HAL. You can run hal-device-manager and see if it
knows about your battery. In my case it doesn't.
