I'm having trouble getting this to connect, but think I'm nearly
there.

The Link and activity lights flash and I get no throughput - I am
expecting the link light to stay on once connected.

In Mandriva HardDrake I run the config tool and leave the preselected
3com option (the alternative is Windows driver with ndiswrapper).

The next screen lists 3 networks (identical to my PDA) and I select my
network.

On the next screen the mode is set to Managed (I have a 3com access
point). Encryption is WPA Preshared key. The AP was set to Pre-shared
passphrase and I pasted the hex key below the phrase (after the phrase
didn't work). I've tried changing the AP to Manual pre shared key
using the same key as well.

The next screen is set to Automatic IP (I have DHCP enabled and that
works in Windows). The next screen is get DNS from DHCP.

I've also tried switching the encryption off both on the AP and my
laptop and that was no better.

The hardware is a 3com 3CRWE154G72 Version 1.0 PCMCIA card in a IBM
Thinkpad T20 laptop.

I've installed Madriva 2007.1, KDE 3.5.

Running dmesg, I have lots of the following lines:

prism54_hostapd - len=3D48
eth1: Caught WPA drop unencrypted request
prism54_hostapd - len=3D48
eth1: Caught WPA supplicant set WPA IE request
eth1: WPA IE Attachment was set
eth1: timeout waiting for mgmt response 250, triggering device
prism54_hostapd - len=3D48
eth1: Caught WPA drop unencrypted request
prism54_hostapd - len=3D48
eth1: Caught WPA supplicant set WPA IE request
eth1: WPA IE Attachment was set

Grateful for any suggestions on what to try next as I don't know what
to try now - I'm learning Linux but am not very familiar with sorting
out hardware issues

PS - I'm new to this list and having problem importing the archive
into my e-mail reader. If it's been answered before then please let me
know when to look in the archive.
