[ltp] X40 trackpad gone nuts: wipe calibration data?

Hello all, Argh help!

My X40's trackpad has started going bananas. It jumps all
over the screen and is totally unusable. I've tried
reducing the sensitivity and that makes things fractionally
better but still unpredictable (there's not necessarily a
correlation between which way I push it and which direction
the pointer goes).

I've taken up the G, H, B keys and looked for dirt near the
device but it seems clean. Is it worth removing the
keyboard entirely?

Does anyone know if it possible to wipe the trackpad's
calibration data? I'm wondering if starting from zero would
help.

Failing that, can anyone recommend either DIY
repair/replacement instructions for the trackpad,
transplanting one from another X40 or a repair dealer who
might be able to help?

I'm fairly sure it isn't a software issue. I've tried a few
different kernel versions to no avail (but I hadn't made a
chance of that type whe nthe problem started happening). I
don't have windows on the machine and it would be
non-trivial to put it on. I could try a BIOS and Controller
software upgrade (mine seems to date from 2004) but I'm
sceptical if that would help.

Thank you
