Had a similar problem with my T41, first USB 2.0 was broken (also under
Windows), then later the sound card vanished temporarily, and half a
year later the disk controller had problems...

Luckily, the machine was still under warranty, so I got the board
replaced. This fixed the problem.

>From what I heard some of these usb problems of early T40/41 models
appear to be related to some problem with static discharge in the south
bridge (note that the usb, sound and hard disk controller are located
there). However, I do not have some first-hand knowledge on this issue.

If on your machine the usb is reliably broken (mine was only temporarily
broken), it might make sense to see service. However, if your machine is
out of warranty, that might be quite expensive...

Hope the best
