My T61 (1280x800 intel GM965), stock Ubuntu Gutsy, Core 2 Duo @ 1.8 GHz,
1 GB of RAM: with powertop and xbacklight I can get the power usage down
to about 14-15W (wifi on). That's about 3.5--4 hours of battery life.

By trying harder (replacing compiz with metacity; killing powernowd and
replacing it with the 'ondemand' CPU governor) and doing unreasonable
stuff (like turning down the LCD backlight to an unreadable 10%) I once
managed to get the power usage to almost 10W. Well, all right, 10.8W.

I recently upgraded to 2 gigs of RAM, it would be interesting to see if
the power usage increased noticeably. Let's see...

=2E.. 13.7W at 50% xbacklight when idle (~13.9W while typing). This
includes an mplayer movie paused in the background, which contributes
~70 wakeups per second. FWIW compiz wakes up at ~20 Hz, Xorg at another
20 Hz, one of the interrupts that serves wifi, USB and audio wakes up at
280 Hz, another one -- USB, cardbus and video -- at 80 Hz; in total I
see about 500 wakeups per second).

Anything can be made to work if you fiddle with it long enough.
