No - in my case, whether its a mouse-move, mouse-click, or keypress, 
it's always serial 31.

I think knoppix is probably the best thing to try next.

Another thought - are you running anything such as xmodmap or xbindkeys?

Also, when you tried out twm, did you re-start the x-server after 
quitting your gnome-session?  This *shouldn't* matter, but it could 
possibly be something persisting from gnome. Anything in your startup 
scripts, eg .bashrc, (or perhaps /etc/X11/Xsession.d/) ?

I'm really guessing here - it seems weird. But I still don't think you 
have a hardware bug, nor a driver bug.
