Try either:
   1)	GUI screensaver controls (xscreensaver/KDE monitor power control etc)
   2)     xset dpms force off
            (It is possible (but very unlikely) that DPMS is disabled in 
xorg.conf)
   3) 	radeontool light off
		(where the driver is relevant).
