Have you tried to switch displays by writing to the file  
/proc/acpi/ibm/video ?

Imho that's because the video layer is not set to the active display. Use  
an other video output driver (eg x11 in case of mplayer) or deactivate all  
displays except the one you are using. Give mplayer a shot, it is really  
good software...
