Probably one can tell the ACPI subsystem when this things are active or not.
I'd suggest reading the ACPI 3.0b spec part about brightness control (google
knows), and the video.c source.

You can ask around in the linux-acpi@vger.kernel.org mailinglist, too.

I'd do it, but the merge window just opened, and I have to race against the
