I am not a graphics person, but here's what I'd try:

First thing you might want to do is change your run level to 3 (instead of 5).
There's probably some way-cool graphics utility to do this, but I just edit
/etc/inittab and change the initdefault field to 3. This way you can login to a
console, try some configuration stuff and then start X manually to see if it helped.
You can start it like this:

$ startx 2>&1 | tee x.log

and that will record all the output of the X server in x.log. Handy at times.

Another thing to try is to create a temporary account (useradd foo) and login to that
account and start X. If it all starts up properly, you've got something whacky in the
myriad of .gnome* directories. My Big Hammer(tm) solution is to move those off and
start over.
