Seems perfectly reasonable. The reason I suggest testing with the Ubuntu 
liveCD, is that (a)it's an easy test to make. and (b) it fairly well 
bisects the problem into hardware vs software.

Run (as root) the commands:

   lsmod | grep snd

   ls /dev/dsp

and post the output in your reply.


Then, run gnome-alsamixer, and see what that does.
