Here is some fresh information for Linux on the T61/R61 (and likely X61..
untested). Someone with a T61 or R61 please test and update thinkwiki.

First, you must be aware that your model works differently than older
ThinkPads. The EC has different behaviour for various things.

1. You *absolutely must use the latest BIOS* if you want the volume keys to
work correctly. And you likely need to keep it up-to-date for a while
yet, Lenovo is fixing things in these BIOS at a fast rate.

2. Volume keys through thinkpad-acpi are *gone*, they are reported as
regular volume keys over the standard keyboard, instead (this is good).
They should be reporting KEY_VOLUMEDOWN, KEY_VOLUMEUP and KEY_MUTE (which
are the standard keycodes for this). Please check this, and report back.

3. Brighness support *requires* either thinkpad-acpi 0.18 with the
brightness_enable=1 parameter, or a properly working ACPI video module.
The use of the ACPI video module instead of thinkpad-acpi is recommended.

4. Some reports lead me to think that the internal thinkpad volume mixer is
*gone* in the T61/R61. If someone would be willing to help me test for
its presence, just reply to this mail. You'll need to be confortable
with ALSA to test for it.

This means that hardare volume control is probably gone from the T61/R61,
and it is now done completely on software (either by the BIOS poking
directly at the HDA mixer, or by the desktop environment).
