I've been having similar problems with both the i810 and newer 'intel'
drivers.  I've also been having an annoying problem where the X server
decides it's time to turn the display off and the whole machine
freezes---without leaving any evidence in the logs.  I've had the same
symptom with a variety of kernels and so am inclined to blame the X
drivers.
