X61s, Debian Lenny, with encrypted everything over lvm as per etch installer, 2.6.22 kernel (self compiled, but I think I didn't change much from the default debian config; I just needed support for wifi and sound hardware). what happens if you go # echo disk > /sys/power/state ?
