Thank you that was it. xlinrad now compiles and starts to run, it errors 
in the ssb menu after a search for devices to create sound while 
processing recorded input:

[dan@x600 linrad-02.35]$ ./xlinrad
Segmentation fault

This is in user mode. If I were to build a system what is a good sound 
card to use?
