The nvidia drivers for Xorg work just fine. (Haven't tried aiglx yet)

I totally second that. T42p was my first ThinkPad. I just upgraded to 
the T61p and like the screen (though it lacks a bit of the IPS/FlexView 
crispness - but at the same time should not have its problems with dust 
on the INSIDE - sic!)
Also just got debian working with vesafb-tng under 2.6.22.6 (the patch 
against 2.6.20 still works just fine).
The default mode is: 1920x1200-32@50
No more jumping through hoops and whatnot like with ATI. Simply works!
