You should consider a BIOS Upgrade, that is for sure.
Also the kernel option acpi_sleep=s3_bios is reported to help on resume 
issues.

On my X61s(which should be similar) it works more or less out of the 
box, using a 2.6.25-rc kernel... but still. I also use the same X-Server 
Version. To track down X-issues you could kill X and try to resume to 
console first.
