Could you try removing the quirks and retest? (for example remove your
thinkpad number
from /usr/share/hal/fdi/information/10freedesktop/20-video-quirk-pm-lenovo.=
fdi restart hal and restest?)

I guess I'm hit with the same kind of bug (see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=3D493900) but still need
to investigate on how/why it's really happening.
