Unfortunately, having your speed consistently lower than somebody else's 
is normal. On my ATI Rage Mobility M3, I get 425fps while someone on 
free3d.org got 785fps. You can't trust glxgears as a benchmark. If you 
do find out how to get that extra mile, maybe it's something I've never 
figured out either, so I'd love to hear it.
