  I've run in the same situation (didn't see your messages before !). I
think it's related to a patch Deban apply on their kernels, see Debian
bug report #444182 : linux-source-2.6.22:
drivers-ata-ata_piix-postpone-pata.patch prevents my dvd writer to be detected
