Dear Jim,
I am using Gkrellm on all my computers to monitor temperatures. Also on my 
A21p with Suse 10.3.
It monitors several functions such as memory, cpu use etc. and is highly 
adaptable.
Cannot remember wether you have to run anything like 'sensors-detect' on the 
Thinkpad (on my desktop I am sure you have to run it). There is a big list of 
themes which can be used. I am using "invisible" because it blends nicely 
into the  background (not completely invisible ;) )
