I've got a R40 running Debian Testing. Am currently using an older
Linksys PCMCIA card, WPC11, Version 4. couldn't find a native driver
for it so had to go the ndiswrapper route. Had some tough times getting
it to work, needed to compile ndiswrapper from source due to a know bug.
. .at least that's what I thought at the time! Ended up writing a bash
script to config the card as couldn't get it set up otherwise. If
you're interested, contact me off list and I'd be happy to send you the
script.

The bottom line is to echo what another person has written. . .make
sure that whatever route you go, that's it supported by native Linux
drivers. Post some fourms and look for specific comments on the card
that you decide to buy! It will save you a lot of time and trouble.

BTW, I'd certainly reconsider the USB/card approach. You can always buy
a relatively cheap usb hub for $10-$20 at home, or where you've not
traveling. Otherwise, just use one of your two on-board USB connectors
when you're using the net.

Good luck, Frank
