I'm using the radeonhd driver here now (after having used the vesa
driver) on my T60, and I must say that I wonder where you saw
a performance difference between the two. After all the radeonhd driver
has still no HW acceleration at all, not even 2D. The only thing it
provides (which happens to be the thing that I was looking for anyway)
is multihead and RandR support.

For me, another reason to stay awaay from ATI is the power consumption,
heat, and noise: it reduces my battery life and causes my fan to always
be spinning.
