I had the same problem on my old R51. I scanned the mail archives of
this list, and someone on this list had replaced the backlight of his
LCD. He mentioned the site.

I have ordered a replacement backlight for my R51 for around 10 euro (a
very narrow fragile tube) and replaced it myself. It turned out that
once you have the right manuals (search for <your model> hardware
maintenance manual on google), it is not too difficult (you need some
basic soldering too).

After replacing my backlight (took me more than 4 hours, mostly due to
being not very handy, i think if you are used to it you can do it in 1.5
hour), no more red tint, and back to the original brightness.

2 months after i made the replacement, the backlight died (when i open
the laptop, the backlight works for 1 second, then i hear a loud hiss,
then it stops working). probably i didn't do the soldering very well. I
have another backlight (i ordered 2) so i might try again :)

i think the vendor was this:
http://www.lcdpart.com/doc/ccflinstallation.html

greetings,
Frank
