Thanks for your input. Hardware here: PCI ID is the same, ath5k says in
syslog:
  ath5k phy0: Atheros AR2424 chip found (MAC: 0xa0, PHY: 0x61)

/proc/interrupt has:
  313:          0          0   PCI-MSI-edge      ath

So, no interrupts generated. WLAN switch is on (shouldn't matter, it is
just RF kill for the transmitter [at least in madwifi]), interface is
up, I performed some (obviously failing) scan requests. Note that I am
not on a special wireless kernel, but plain vanilla git kernels from
Linus.
