Use something like gnome-alsamixer, or amixer for the normal alsa
config.  You want to mute the mic on the output side. You may also want
to enable the "20 db mic boost" to get a bit more sensitivity.  As for
the input side, there are sometimes some rather confusing mixer

I solved it on an A22 (probably still mostly relevant)

Personally, I think pulseaudio is a solution for a non-existent problem:
Arts/Esd were obsolete as soon as ALSA got dmix/dsnoop, so I'd just
uninstall it.
