Wait, you used a 64-bit (x86_64 architecture) kernel and *still* saw
only 3GB of RAM on your T61p Thinkpad?

If that is the case, and if you are running the latest BIOS / EC
firmware, then call Lenovo and have them replace either the faulty RAM
or the faulty Thinkpad under warranty.

In other words: PAE may not work, but if the 64-bit kernel doesn't then
you have another fault -- firmware or hardware.
