I second this with Ubuntu 8.10 (2.6.27) on ThinkPad T41 (2373-2GG).
Everything worked fine in 8.04 (2.6.24), but now I'm getting this:
$ dmesg | grep bay
[ 28.112990] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.IDE0.SCND.MSTR: found ejectable bay
[ 28.113048] ACPI: Error installing bay notify handler
[ 30.152287] thinkpad_acpi: another device driver is already handling
[ 30.152291] thinkpad_acpi: disabling subdriver bay
[ 30.152547] Registered led device: tpacpi::bay_active
[ 42.740067] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.IDE0.SCND.MSTR: found ejectable bay
[ 42.740119] ACPI: Error installing bay notify handler
> /sys/devices/platform/bay.* and /proc/acpi/ibm/bay are missing.
So it's not possible to correctly power off UltraBay device.
